A<\/span> team<\/span> of<\/span> scientists<\/span> at<\/span> Google’s<\/span> research<\/span> lab<\/span> announced<\/span> last<\/span> week<\/span> in<\/span> the<\/span> journal<\/span> Nature<\/span> that<\/span> they<\/span> had<\/span> built<\/span> a<\/span> quantum<\/span> computer<\/span> that<\/span> could<\/span> perform<\/span> calculations<\/span> in<\/span> about<\/span> 200<\/span> seconds<\/span> that<\/span> would<\/span> take<\/span> a<\/span> classical<\/span> supercomputer<\/span> some<\/span> 10,000<\/span> years<\/span> to<\/span> do<\/span>.<\/p>\nAn<\/span> age<\/span> of<\/span> “Quantum<\/span> supremacy<\/span>” was<\/span> duly<\/span> declared<\/span>.<\/p>\nGoogle’s<\/span> claim<\/span> to<\/span> have<\/span> achieved<\/span> quantum<\/span> supremacy<\/span> –<\/span> that<\/span> is<\/span>, to<\/span> have<\/span> accomplished<\/span> a<\/span> task<\/span> that<\/span> traditional<\/span> computers<\/span> can’t<\/span> –<\/span> was<\/span> premature<\/span>.<\/p>\nAlthough<\/span> the<\/span> specific<\/span> problem<\/span> that<\/span> Google’s<\/span> computer<\/span> solved<\/span> won’t<\/span> have<\/span> much<\/span> practical<\/span> significance<\/span>, simply<\/span> getting<\/span> the<\/span> technology<\/span> to<\/span> work<\/span> was<\/span> a<\/span> triumph<\/span>; comparisons<\/span> to<\/span> the<\/span> Wright<\/span> brothers<\/span>‘ early<\/span> flights<\/span> aren’t<\/span> far<\/span> off<\/span> the<\/span> mark<\/span>.<\/p>\nCongress<\/span> should<\/span> fund<\/span> basic<\/span> research<\/span> at<\/span> labs<\/span> and<\/span> universities<\/span>, ensure<\/span> the<\/span> U.S.<\/span> welcomes<\/span> immigrants<\/span> with<\/span> relevant<\/span> skills<\/span>, invest<\/span> in<\/span> cutting-edge<\/span> infrastructure<\/span>, and<\/span> use<\/span> the<\/span> government’s<\/span> vast<\/span> leverage<\/span> as<\/span> a<\/span> consumer<\/span> to<\/span> support<\/span> promising<\/span> quantum<\/span> technologies<\/span>.<\/p>\nA<\/span> more<\/span> distant<\/span> worry<\/span> is<\/span> that<\/span> advanced<\/span> quantum<\/span> computers<\/span> could<\/span> one<\/span> day<\/span> threaten<\/span> the<\/span> public-key<\/span> cryptography<\/span> that<\/span> protects<\/span> information<\/span> across<\/span> the<\/span> digital<\/span> world<\/span>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\nThis is big for a number of reasons but do not get too excited\/scared yet! Quantum computing is still a number of years away. IBM was also quick to point out that Google’s estimate for how long “Summit” (the fastest computer in the world currently Google estimated against), was incorrect. According to papers published after Google’s report, “IBM\u2019s engineers reckon, [adjustments would] allow Summit to breeze through the job in a mere 2\u00bd days. Therefore, according to IBM, Google had not shown quantum supremacy after all.”<\/p>\n
Well, that was quick.<\/p>\n
What does that mean for their supposed success? Well, it’s still impressive. Google demonstrated a monstrous leap in technological prowess and got one step closer to proving a plethora of theories that many computer scientists are still eagerly waiting to take a crack at. P = NP anyone?<\/p>\n
But wait, not so fast. Technically yeah, Google was wrong, but you still have to compare and contrast the differing performance results. Two and a half days is, after all, still about 1,200 times longer than 3 minutes.<\/p>\n
Second, each extra qubit doubles the memory required by a classical machine put up against it. Adding just three qubits to Google\u2019s challenger machine would have exhausted Summit\u2019s hard disks. Quantum computers do not face such explosively growing demands. Google\u2019s machine may not quite have crossed the finishing line. But it has got pretty close to doing so.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
Additionally, Bloomberg has an excellent point when it says the U.S. should invest in this technology, if they aren’t already. They likely are behind the scenes, as a foreign entity such as China being the first to own a Quantum Computer is very scary. As Bloomberg pointed out, Quantum Computers make breaking passwords look like a walk in the park. Our current method of storing passwords would be under direct attack from Quantum Computing, and it’s one of the reasons the research is so dangerous.<\/p>\n
